John Travolta Says Psychiatric Drugs to Blame for School Shootings
John Travolta says he agrees with Tom Cruise's views on psychiatric drugs and says he thinks these drugs are to blame for most of the school shootings.
"I don't disagree with anything Tom says," Travolta says in the July issue of W magazine, on newsstands Friday. "How would I have presented it? Maybe differently than how he did, but it doesn't matter. I still think that if you analyze most of the school shootings, it is not gun control. It is (psychotropic) drugs at the bottom of it."
It's true that many of the school shooters were on antidepressants and many - not just Scientologists like Travolta and Cruise - believe there is a link.
While taking the drugs themselves often causes psychotic reactions, it is also frequently the case that withdrawal from these drugs causes normally peaceful people to become violent and murderous.
I agree with John Travolta that we can't jump to the conclusion that lack of gun control is the cause of school shootings. Vermont has one of the most relaxed stances on gun control in the country and has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the country. The people who really want to go on a shooting rampage are going to get their guns illegally, anyway.
Do people want to blame guns because they can't face the fact that questionable medical treatment may be to blame for these horrors? How many more school shootings do we need to live through before someone says enough is enough when it comes to the overprescription of antidepressants in adolescents and teens?
You don't have to be a Scientologist to see that something is very wrong and needs to be changed within the psychiatric system.

There is no documented evidence that this is true.
I have personally witnessed someone I know well, become psychotic and violent on effexor. This person has been fine now for 4 years. You can read thousands of news stories about this, at ssristories.com
In 1999 a study conducted by Adrian Preda, M.D.; Rebecca W. MacLean, M.D.; Carolyn M. Mazure, Ph.D.; and Malcolm B. Bowers, Jr., M.D. found that 8.1% of Psychiatric Admissions to hospitals were due to Antidepressant-Associated Mania and Psychosis (J Clin Psychiatry 2001;62:30-33). The number must be higher now because the numbers of people taking antidepressants has risen significantly.

I cannot say with authority that drugs were the reason behind the various school shootings, but we all should be aware that psychotropic drugs can have a very different effect on children and teens. Also, in adolescents and teens just the maturing process with the changes in harmones, etc. combined with any mental problems they might be having can be a collision course in itself. Sometimes it's easier for adults to turn a blind eye to what's really happening with children and teens because it is so difficult to deal with. Guns may have been the tool for the killing, but something else was driving the act whether it was mental illness, psychosis, improper medication, and the list goes on. These kids were tormented individuals whether it was imagined or not.
Hey Stac. I have watched John Travolta on many talk shows and have found him to be one of the most gracious and kindest of all actors I have seen. And so what if he has put on some weight; it looks good on him and he is still a great actor. I much prefer him to the "skinny" dude in Urban cowboy. That was such a drugstore image of Texas. No, he has not gone downhill, he's man enough to be comfortable with who he really is and that's more than I can say for most people.

Maybe its really crazy kids tend to already be diagnosed? Perhaps psychiatrists should be prescribing MORE meds like anti-psychotics instead of less powerful and apparently ineffective like anti-depressants?
How do John Travolta and Tom Cruise know all this? I think it would be very sad if someone who really needed and could benefit from psycotropic drugs were to see that two no-nothing holier-than-thou movie stars condemned these medications, and thought they must know what they are talking about.
